SWEDEN. A Swedish high ranking politician and MP, Sten Bergheden, has been appointed to head spokesman over animal issues in the Conservative/Liberal Party “Moderaterna” (Sweden’s second largest political Party), despite that he has been forbidden to have anything to do with horses, after he a few years ago was found guilty of repeatedly animal abuse of his ponies, that was in so bad shape that they were forced to be euthanized by the authorities.
When the authorities found the ponies in Sten Berghedens farm in Mariestad in 2007, they could not believe their eyes and were chocked over what they have found.
The ponies were in so bad condition where they were found incarcerated, starved and neglected. The hooves were so long that the animals had trouble moving. In the horses’ drinking water they found dead crows laying around.
– It was the worst thing I have ever seen, said the environmental inspector Anna Agné to Aftonbladet back in 2007.
Even the courts, Länsrätten and Kammarrätten, found the case so disturbing, that they banned the MP to have anything to do with horses again. They also found that there was a big risk that the MP would repeat the abuse, if he was allowed to have horses again.
But the Conservative Party, Moderaterna, sees no problem with Bergheden to having anything to do with animals. They now even have appointed him to head spokesman regarding agricultural and rural policy questions, which includes animal issues and animal rights.
“He has atoned for his crime. One must have the right to return”, says Ewa Thalen Finné, second deputy group leader of the Conservatives in the Swedish Parliament.
